Dr. Leora Berns, a licensed optometrist since 1986, is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Connecticut Association of Optometrists.

In 1992 she was appointed to the Connecticut Board of Examiners in Optometry and served the people of the state in that capacity until 2008. 

She was a member of the Clinical Skills Examination committee for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry, from 1999 to 2009, helping to write the exam which tests newly licensed optometrists  throughout the country.  She acts as an examiner for the National Boards every year.  She also serves as an official reviewer of courses offered world-wide for continuing education. 

Among her numerous honors, she is most proud of the President's Award, which she received from the Connecticut Association of Optometrists in 1993, and the Award for Optometrist of the Year in Connecticut, 1995.

Dr. Berns is active in Soroptimist International of the Farmington Valley, a women's service organization serving women and girls in our community and throughout the world.  She was elected President of the local chapter in 2008 and 2009.  

In her free time, she enjoys gardening, knitting, reading, and folk dancing. 

Dr. Michael Shiembob, a native of Connecticut, graduated from Weitherfield High School and Trinity College, where he majored in Biology and Economics.

He attended the Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry and graduated in 1999. He has practiced in Avon for 9 years.

In his spare time he enjoys reading, particularly history, and golf.
