Avon Eye Care is the first eye care practice in the Farmington Valley to acquire the most up-to-date diagnostic technology.

Officially called the IVue OCT (Ocular Coherence Tomography), this instrument allows us to visualize layers of the eye that cannot be seen with any other current instrument.  For example, the retina, which is thinner than a piece of paper, is composed of 10 distinct layers.  With a non-invasive laser scan, we can now get a picture of what is going on below the surface.  This is important in conditions like Macular Degeneration,  Diabetic Retinopathy, or with “freckles” that look suspicious.   

This tool can also help diagnose and monitor for glaucoma.  If we  determine that the Nerve Fiber Layer is thinner than it should be, this may be because the individual nerves are dying off.  The OCT has become invaluable in our management of a disease which is extremely difficult to track.
